If you have ever looked at the ingredient list on a packaged food, you have probably noticed more ingredients than are necessary. And ice cream is no different! We have a super simple recipe for homemade vanilla ice cream that is so easy to make and the whole family will love. Plus, it’s nice to have a treat that has better for you options than what you will find in the store.
Why use maple syrup as the sweetener?
One of the standout ingredients in this recipe is pure maple syrup as the sweetener. Of course anything with sugar of any type added isn’t something you are going to want to have all the time. It is a ‘treat’ and should be treated as such.
But, in my opinion you can choose ‘better for you’ options when having a treat. In this instance, pure maple syrup is a better option than plain old granulated sugar.
Pure maple syrup does come with added nutrients of some sort as it hasn’t been stripped of them like granulated sugar has. It also has a lower glycemic index, meaning it won’t have as much of an effect on your blood sugar.
Ingredients Needed

This is a super simple ingredient list:
- Whole milk
- Heavy cream
- Maple Syrup
- Himalayan pink salt
- Vanilla extract
How To Make Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
1. Place the bowl of your ice cream maker into the freezer AT LEAST 16 hours before you plan to make your ice cream. I like to do 24 hours.

2. Whisk all ingredients together in mixing bowl.

3. Pour into the frozen bowl of the ice cream maker.

4.Turn on immediately. Churn ice cream for approximately 30 minutes. Follow manufacturers directions for your ice cream maker.

5.You can serve immediately and it will be a ‘soft serve’ type ice cream. Or, you can put in the freezer for 2-3 hours and you will be able to scoop the ice cream more easily.
6. Enjoy!

How to Serve Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream
The sky is the limit when it comes to serving this recipe. Please note that with maple syrup as the sweetener, you will be able to taste it. My family loves it!
Topping Ideas:
- Chocolate
- Caramel
- Coconut
- Fruit
- Think any type of sundae: strawberry, raspberry, banana or whatever you love.
- Nuts
- Nothing adds a good crunch like your favorite nut. You can even add a drizzle of peanut butter or another nut butter.
- Add-Ins
- Strawberries
- Chocolate Chips
- Cookie Crumbles
- Get creative- it’s vanilla ice so pretty much any topping you like will work well!
- Serve with your favorite pies, cakes or my personal favorite – brownies.
Storage of Leftovers
This recipe makes enough for our family of four. So we rarely have leftovers. If you do, I recommend using a glass (Pyrex) air tight storage container. It truly tastes best eaten right after making but, I wouldn’t hesitate to eat leftovers;) You will need to let it defrost a bit before scooping it. The texture will be slightly different but the flavor will be amazing.
